HSS vs Ordinary Tool Steel: The Real Cost Comparison

Selection FactorHSS (High Speed Steel)Ordinary Carbon Tool Steel
Edge hardnessHRC 60–64 after hardening and temperingHRC 52–58
Alloy contentTungsten, molybdenum, vanadium and chromium carbidesCarbon with little or no alloying
Wear resistanceHigh — resists abrasion from coated and recycled stockModerate — edge dulls quickly on coated paper
Edge retention3–5× longer between regrindsFrequent regrinding and replacement
Red hardnessHolds hardness to roughly 600 °C at the cutting edgeSoftens above about 200 °C
Cut quality over lifeStraight, square, burr-free cut for most of its service lifeEdge rolls and burns, cuts drift out of square
ToughnessGood — tolerates normal guillotine shock loads without chippingSofter; deforms rather than chips

Cost per cutLower over the full service lifeHigher across the same production volume

For print shops, binderies and paper mills running more than one shift, HSS almost always wins on total cost. Tell us the stock you cut and your daily lift count — our engineers will confirm whether an HSS upgrade pays back on your guillotine.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paper Cutter Blades

What materials can your paper cutter blades cut?
They cut a wide range of paper and board: plain and coated paper, cardboard, gift box board, corrugated paper, laminated stock and recycled paper grades. For very abrasive or heavily coated materials we recommend a cobalt-alloyed HSS grade such as M35 for a longer edge life.
Are your blades compatible with my paper cutting machine?
Yes. Our paper cutter blades are made as direct replacements for most common guillotines, including Polar, Wohlenberg, Perfecta, Ideal, Itoh, Schneider and Maxima. Send us your machine model and we will match the dimensions, hole pattern and bevel angle.
What material are your paper cutter blades made of?
They are made from high speed steel (HSS), normally grade M2 (W6Mo5Cr4V2), hardened and tempered to HRC 60-64. M35 with cobalt is available for harder or more abrasive stock. HSS keeps its hardness at high cutting temperatures far better than ordinary carbon steel, which is why the edge lasts longer.
Can you customize the size of paper cutter blades?
Yes. Length, width, thickness, bevel angle and hole positions are all made to your requirements. We work from your drawing, a photo of the original blade, or simply the machine model, and we reproduce bolt holes, slots and counterbores exactly.
How long do your HSS blades last compared to ordinary steel?
In typical production, HSS edges last about 3-5 times longer between regrinds than ordinary carbon tool steel, and they hold a square cut for most of that life. The exact interval depends on the stock you cut, the lift height and your cutting pressure.
Do you provide free samples for testing?
Yes, samples are available so you can test the edge quality and service life on your own machine before placing a bulk order. Contact us with your specification and we will arrange the sample and the shipping.
How do I find the right blade size for my guillotine?
The quickest way is to send the machine model (for example Polar 115 or Wohlenberg 92), or a photo of the blade with a ruler across its length, width and thickness. You can also check the machine compatibility table on this page, which lists standard sizes for the most common models.
Can HSS paper cutter blades be resharpened?
Yes. HSS blades can be reground several times before the hardened layer is exhausted, as long as enough width remains to keep the clamp and hole positions correct. Many customers regrind five to ten times before replacing a blade.
What is the difference between HSS and tungsten carbide paper cutter blades?
HSS is tougher and more cost-effective, and is the standard choice for most guillotines and trimmers. Tungsten carbide is considerably harder (HRA 87-92.5) and lasts longer on highly abrasive stock, but it is more brittle and more expensive. Tell us the material and the machine and we will recommend which one suits your line.
What is the usual lead time, and how do you ship?
Standard sizes are usually produced in 7-15 working days, while fully custom blades are confirmed individually at order stage. Blades ship with edge protection in sealed export cases suitable for sea and air freight, and we deliver worldwide.
