Tungsten Carbide vs Tool Steel: The Real Cost Comparison

Edge hardnessHRA 87–92.5 (approx. HV 1300–1600)HRC 58–62 (approx. HV 650–750)
Wear resistanceExceptional — designed for abrasive materialsModerate — dulls quickly on kraft liner and film
Edge retention10–20× longer intervals between changesFrequent sharpening and replacement
Resharpening intervalWeeks to months in typical serviceHours to days on abrasive webs
Cut quality over lifeStable, burr-free edge for most of its lifeDegrades quickly as the edge wears
Heat resistanceKeeps hardness at high running temperaturesSoftens and loses edge above ~200 °C
Edge toughnessGrade-dependent — YG15/YG20 for shock loadsGood — tolerates impact better than fine-grain carbide

For high-volume packaging lines, carbide almost always wins on total cost. Send us your material and machine speed — our engineers will confirm whether a carbide upgrade pays back for your line.

Not sure which grade fits your material? As a rule: finer, harder grades (YG6/YG8) for abrasive light webs; tougher grades (YG15/YG20) where edges see impact or board edges. Send us your application and we will recommend the grade, thickness and edge profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tungsten carbide blade and how is it different from tool steel?
A tungsten carbide (carbide) blade is sintered from tungsten carbide (WC) grains bonded with cobalt. It reaches HRA 87–92.5 hardness — roughly double that of hardened tool steel — so it holds a sharp edge 10 to 20 times longer on abrasive materials like kraft liner, films and tapes.
Which carbide grade should I choose: YG6, YG8, YG10X, YG15 or YG20?
Choose by abrasion versus impact: YG6/YG8 for high-wear, low-shock cutting of film, foil and paper; YG10X for corrugated slitter scorers; YG15/YG20 where edges see impact or heavy board. Send us your material and line speed and we will recommend the grade.
What sizes and shapes can you produce?
We grind carbide blades to your drawing: circular blades with any diameter, bore and bevel profile; straight blades in custom lengths and thicknesses; slotting, scoring and toothed profiles. If you send a used blade or the machine model, we reproduce the specification.
How long do carbide blades last compared to tool steel?
In typical packaging service, carbide edges last 10–20 times longer between changes than D2/SKD11 tool steel. The exact interval depends on the material abrasiveness, line speed and cutting pressure — many customers switch from daily steel changes to weekly or monthly carbide changes.
Can carbide blades be resharpened?
Yes. Circular blades can be reground several times before the carbide layer is exhausted, as long as enough radial width remains. We can regrind your used blades and restore the original edge geometry — contact us for details.
Do you provide samples for testing?
Yes, samples are available for trial on your machine. Contact us with your specification or the blade you currently use, and we will arrange a sample and shipping.
What information do you need to quote my blade?
Dimensions (diameter, bore and thickness for circular blades; width, length and thickness for straight blades), the carbide grade if known, and the material being cut. If you are unsure, send a photo of the used blade with its packaging label and the machine model.
How do you prevent chipping on carbide edges?
Chipping is controlled through grain size and grade selection: fine-grain grades for sharp, low-impact edges; cobalt-rich tough grades (YG15/YG20) for shock loads. Our grinding and polishing process also removes micro-cracks left by coarse grinding, which are the usual starting point for edge chips.
What is the usual lead time?
Standard sizes are usually produced in 7–15 working days. Fully custom profiles or special grades are confirmed individually at order stage depending on grinding complexity and current production schedule.
Do you ship worldwide?
Yes. We export carbide blades globally in shock-proof, sealed packaging suitable for sea and air freight, serving customers across Europe, the Americas, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Email dkeblade@163.com or WhatsApp +86 138 5558 8148 for shipping options to your country.
